Hyman Goldberg, 89, Enjoyed Golfing, Bowling and Watching Sports

Born in Lorain and a lifelong resident of the city, he was a respected attorney in practice for fifty-five years. Even after he closed his office, he continued to receive calls from clients with whom he enjoyed long and warm relationships.

Hyman graduated from Lorain High School (1938B) and attended Ohio State University (ROTC). During World War II he was inducted into the US Army and attended Ohio University until he was sent to the Pacific Theatre where he served in the Signal Corps. After the war, he returned to Lorain and while managing his parent’s corner grocery store, commuted by bus to Cleveland John Marshall Law School. Hyman graduated cum laude and opened his first office in the back of the grocery store.

He served as President of Agudath B’nai Israel Synagogue from 1969-70 and 1972 and was a lifetime trustee, as well as co-chair of the A.B.I. Holocaust Education Foundation, a member of the Lorain Jewish Welfare Fund, and a lifetime member of Hadassah. He was the State President of Ohio B’nai B’rith, a member of the Lorain County Bar Association, a Mason, and a member of the Jewish War Veterans who enjoyed marching in Memorial Day Parades. He acted as lay leader of the A.B.I. congregation in between rabbis, delivering many thoughtfully-prepared sermons, conducting religious services and funerals, and often representing the Jewish community at civic events.

Hyman and his wife Frances were honored by the synagogue for their many years of service.

Hy loved to watch sports and competed in the B’nai Brith Bowling and Early Riser Golf leagues. In 1975, while golfing at Emerald Valley with his wife he scored a hole in one. Hy was a loving and supportive husband, sharing his life with Frances for sixty years, a devoted father, a beloved brother and uncle, and an adored grandfather. A man who chose his words carefully, and ever the lawyer, he often responded to his childrens’ requests by saying "I’ll take that under advisement." He will be greatly missed and remembered for his wisdom, advice, indomitable spirit, his traditional religious values, and life well lived.

He is survived by children Sharon, Sherwin (Sandra), and Howard, granddaughters Rebecca and Allison, and grandson Jeremy (Vanessa Bilanceri). He was preceded in death by Frances, his parents Philip and Rebecca Goldberg,b rothers David, Meyer, William and Marvin, and sister Annette Hirsch.

A service will be held at ABI synagogue 1715 Pole Ave. (at Meister Rd.) on Sunday September 26, at 2 p.m. followed by burial at Salem Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451.

Mourning will be observed Monday – Tuesday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a brief service at the home of Sherwin and Sandy Goldberg 3951 Edgewood Drive, Lorain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frances S. Goldberg Holocaust Education Fund or Jewish Relief Services A.B.I. Synagogue, PO Box 3188, Lorain 44052.
