Melvin J. "Muggs" Giasomo, 90, US Navy Veteran, Enjoyed Traveling and Playing Cards

Melvin J. "Muggs" Giasomo, 90, of Lorain, died Thursday September 23, 2010 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a short illness.

He was born November 4, 1919 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Muggs graduated from Lorain High School and served with the US Navy during World War II in Panama and the South Atlantic.

He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a scheduler and planner retiring in 1982.

Muggs was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, Italian-American Veterans Club #1 in Lorain and the "14th Street Gang". He enjoyed traveling, playing cards and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Matilda J. "Tillie" Giasomo (nee Krukowski), sister Minnie Widland of San Fernando, California, sister-in-law Evelyn "Evie" Pafumi, niece Mary Ann Pafumi, nephew Ernest "Ernie" Pafumi, all of Leeds, Alabama, nephew David Milasky of Avon, niece Diane Kremser of Las Vegas, Nevada and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Salvatore & Carmella Giasomo, sisters Margaret Giasomo and Mary Barrella, brother Thomas "Tuma" Giasomo and niece Diane Erbe.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Richard Hudak, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Italian-American Veterans #1 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
