Alfred E. Gross, 82, US Army Vetern, Enjoyed Cleveland Sports and Travelling

Alfred E. Gross, age 82 of Lorain, died Friday October 1, 2010 in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 25, 1928 in Lorain and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1946.

Mr. Gross worked 32 years at Thew Shovel in Lorain until it closed, then for 2 years at Lorain Ford Plant.

He was a Korean War Army veteran, having served in the 101st Airborne Division. He received the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.

He belonged to St. John's United Church of Christ in Lorain, and the Alliance of Transylvanian's Saxons. Mr. Gross loved watching sporting events, especially the Buckeyes, Browns and Indians. He also enjoyed traveling, and had an affinity for being out West, off of the beaten path, and traveling to casinos.

He is survived by a son Alan (Jenny) Gross of Huntington Twp., a daughter Dawn (Craig) Kroh of Lorain, and grandchildren Kira and Alec, Devon and Nicholas.

Sisters Dorothy Lachman of Lorain, Rose Gross of Vermilion, and Betty Ralph of Lorain, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Susie (Kellner) Gross, a sister Helen Phillips and a brother William Gross.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 PM and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in Reichlin-Cooley Funeral Home, 2920 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Philip Kunz will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 30 and the VFW Post 451.
