Maria F. Valdes, 93, Enjoyed Walking and Designing Clothes

Photo of Maria F. Valdes Maria F. Valdes (nee Varela) 93, of Lorain passed away Sunday October 10, 2010 in Anchor Lodge Nursing Home, Lorain.

She was born April 2, 1917 in Quemando De Guines, Cuba. She immigrated to the United States in 1970. She moved from Miami, Florida to Lorain in 1989.

Mrs. Valdes was very proud to receive her United States citizenship in 1998. She was a homemaker and mother, who was a very talented seamstress. She designed clothing. She enjoyed walking.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter Maria Santos of Lorain, and son Dagoberto Valdes of Queens, New York, brother Armando Varela of Cuba, sisters Digna Valdes of Queens and Zoraida Varela of Miami, Fla., grandchildren Danny Santos and Christy Franco both of Lorain, Janett Bernardo of Tampa and Joann Valdes of Plantation, Fla., great grandchildren Natalie and Natasha Bernaldo Tampa and Kevin Brown of Plantation.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 year Heriberto Valdes in 1989, her parents Nicolas Varela Casanova and Pastora Santana Aleman, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Her family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio, phone (440) 277-8164. Her funeral service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Minister Shawn Cleveland of the House of Praise International Church, Lorain will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, Ohio.
