Glen C. Pelter, 86, US Army Vetern, Enjoyed Gardening and Sports

Photo of Glen C.  Pelter Glen C. "Flash" Pelter, 86 of Lorain died Friday evening, November 5, 2010 at the West Bay Care and Rehabilitation Center in Westlake following a short illness.

Mr. Pelter was born in Elyria on June 17, 1924, the son of the late Waldon H and Wealthy S (nee Whitacre) Pelter.

He was a 1946 graduate of Elyria High School. He was on the track team as a pole vaulter.

Mr. Pelter was a decorated veteran of the United States Army during WW II. He was assigned to the 143rd Infantry, Co. E, Division 36 and saw his first overseas assignment in Africa. Pvt. Pelter was then sent to San Pietro Italy for duty and was captured by enemy forces there. He spent the next 18 months as a POW, the majority of the time in Stalag 2B in Germany. His service earned him the EAME Theater Ribbon with One Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and on Oct 13, 1947 the World War II Victory Medal.

Following his release from the prison camp, he returned to the US and was assigned to the Military Police Unit.

After discharge, Mr. Pelter returned to Lorain to live. He worked as a 1st helper in the Open Hearth and the Bop Shop at US Steel. After 37 years of service, he retired in 1983.

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain and was an usher.

Mr. Pelter was a member of the Black River Genealogical Society, VFW Post 451, The Barbed Wire, USW Local 1104 and several bowling leagues.

He enjoyed gardening, play cards, country music, bowling, was an avid sports fan, especially the Indians and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Mr. Pelter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith L. (nee Weigand) Pelter, sons Thomas C Pelter, Gary S Pelter both of Lorain, Tim J (Kelly) Pelter of Streetsboro, grandchildren Jake W. Pelter, Racheal E. Pelter, sisters Evelyn L Raesler of Amherst and Phyllis (Jerry) Korn of Titusville, FL.

Friends may call on Monday, November 8, 2010 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. & 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home with Rev. Philip Kunz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst Township with full military honors provide jointly by the VFW Post 451 and the American Legion Post 30, both of Lorain.
