Jeresmo J. ''Jerry'' Keron, 86, Former Lorain County Commissioner
Jeresmo J. "Jerry" Keron, 86, of Elyria, died Wednesday November 24, 2010 at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria after a short illness.
He was born October 17, 1924 in Lorain and had been a lifelong resident in the Elyria and Lorain areas.
Jerry graduated from Clearview High School, the Franklin Institute of Technology in Cleveland and the Cleveland Police Academy.
A Marine Corps veteran, he served three years in World War II and two years overseas. In 1950 he was recalled to service in the Korean War.
From 1950 to 1955 Jerry worked as a patrolman for the Lorain Police Department and served as the president of the Fraternal Order of Police. For 13 years he was the owner and operator of Jerry's Restaurant on Broadway in Lorain.
Jerry began his political career in 1960 serving two two-year terms as Council-At-Large in the city of Lorain and chairing various committees. In 1966 he was elected to his first term as Lorain County Commissioner and was re-elected to terms in 1970, 1974 and 1978 before retiring in 1982. Along with his many political activities, Jerry served as a precinct committeeman and was a member of the Democrat Party County Central Executive Committee until 2003.
Jerry was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lorain where he served as a church officer and trustee for nine years and sang in the church choir. He was a member of VFW Post #1079 of Elyria, Sheffield Masonic Lodge #628 of Lorain where he was a 32nd Degree Mason and the Scottish Rite of Cleveland. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and small engine repair.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Patricia E. Keron (nee Britton), children Marguerite Haslage, Tom Keron and Penelope Sackett (Jon), stepchildren Desi Hrivnak (Michael Racano), Blain Kisling (Suzie) and Randy Kisling (Kim), 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, sister Thespo "Tess" Szanto and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Margaret Keron (nee Bodak), sister Pauline Stamos and brothers George and Dan Keron.
The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4, 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Black River Masonic Lodge #786 will conduct services on Sunday at 7:15 pm followed by the Trisayion service at 7:30 pm. Additional visiting will be held on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at St. Nicholas Greek Othodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd, Lorain. The Rev. Michael Gulgas, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst where VFW Post #1079 of Elyria will conduct military honors.
