Carl E. "Sonny" Born, 79, Enjoyed Going to the Park with His Children, Gardening and Bowling
Carl E. "Sonny" Born, 79, of Lorain, died Wednesday December 8, 2010 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky after a long illness.
He was born March 18, 1931 in Lorain and had lived in the Lorain area most of his life. He had also lived in Sheffield Lake and California.
Carl served with the US Army during the Korean War and then with the Coast Guard just after the war.
He worked at the General Motors Fisher Guide plant in Elyria as a shipping clerk/quality control retiring in 1986. Prior to that he worked for Great Lakes Shipping and, after his retirement from GM, he worked for the city of Sheffield Lake water department.
Carl was a past member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain. He loved animals and had rescued many stray dogs and cats. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, bowling, collecting model ships, jigsaw puzzles, going to the park with his children, walking his dogs and helping his children with projects around their homes.
He is survived by his children Bonnie Robles (Rey), Tony Born, Barbara Smith (Roy), all of Lorain, Rebecca Cypher (Dr. Jeffrey) of Brunswick and Matthew Born of Cleveland, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, sisters Janet Wilhelms of Berea and Lillian Born of Amherst, 5 nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents Carlton E. Born, Sr and Jean Born (nee Marsh).
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the mausoleum at Resthaven Memory Gardens, 3700 Center Rd., Avon where the VFW Post #1079 of Elyria will conduct military honors.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain.
