Jay C. Hershey, Jr., 72, Former Athletic Director for Wellington & Oberlin Schools

Photo of Jay C. Hershey, Jr. Jay C. Hershey, Jr., 72, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation after a short illness.

Born January 17, 1939 in Lorain he had been a Vermilion resident since 1977 moving from Olmsted Falls.

Jay was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked as an assistant principal and athletic director for the Wellington and Oberlin School Districts. After retirement, he worked with Dr. Kolczum at the Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Department. He had also coached football and basketball.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and had attended the Church of the North Coast, Lorain. He was a member of the Vermilion Lions Club and served on the board of the Salvation Army, Vermilion. He served on the State Board of the FCCLA, the Lorain County Football Coaches Association, the Lorain County Athletic Administrators, BGSU National Champions Mid American conference, and was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of AMVETS Post 22. He enjoyed golf and was a Head Marshall at the Muirfield Memorial Golf Tournament.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Marcia (nee Maglott) Hershey, daughters, Jayne Miller, Delaware and Lisa (Bruce) Buchanan, Vermilion; brother, Tad Hershey, Lorain; sisters, Sheryl (Rand) Miller, Springfield, Sue (Richard) Kovacs, Lorain, and Pam (Jim) Ellis, Avon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Edith (nee Stang) Hershey and his daughter, Melissa Jayne Hershey.

Friends may call Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 from 2 -4 pm and 7- 9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors at 7 p.m. The Vermilion Lions Club Ceremony will follow. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Pastor Troy Thompson, associate pastor of the Church of the North Coast, will officiate. Interment will be at Mansfield Memorial Park, 2507 Park Avenue West, Mansfield, Ohio, Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11 a.m.
