William F. Janezic, 87, US Navy Veteran, Enjoyed Spending Time with Family and Fishing

Photo of William F. Janezic William F. Janezic, age 87, of Lorain, passed away Thursday January 20th at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an extended illness.

He was born in Lorain on August 7, 1923 and was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1941.

Mr. Janezic was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Gun Captain aboard the Destroyer USS Cushing. He was a member of Amvets Post # 22.

Bill was employed as a welder for many years at the Thew Division of Koehring Company. Following that company's relocation to Tennessee, he became a maintenance man on the Charles Berry Bridge in Lorain, which is still acknowledged as the second largest bascule bridge in the world. He later was promoted to Bridge Operator and subsequently retired as Bridge Supervisor in 1988.

Mr. Janezic was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain and was also a member of the KSKJ Slovenian Fraternal Lodge. He was an avid and long-time camper at Berta's Campground in Vermilion. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with his family as well as fishing.

Survivors include his sons Jack (Jill) Janezic of Sheffield Lake, and Jeffrey (Jeannine) Janezic of Wakeman, daughter Joy M. (Danny) Rico of Vermilion Township, grandson Frank, and step-granddaughters Cassandra and Cayla.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine "Gerry" Janezic in September of 2010, by an infant daughter, Renee, by his parents Frank and Matilda (nee Svet) Janezic, and by his sister Corinne Meyers.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, with the Reverend Craig Hovanec, pastor of the parish presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
