Peter A. Costello, 85, US Army Veteran, Enjoyed Spending Time with Family and Grandchildren, Golfing and Bowling

Photo of Peter A. Costello Peter A. Costello, 85, of Lorain, died Monday February 14, 2011 at St. John Westshore Hospital in Westlake after a short illness.

He was born August 1, 1925 in Cherryhill, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain most of his life.

Peter served with the US Army during World War II in the 3191st Engineer Base Depot in Germany and France. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon, Army Occupation Medal Germany, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a millwright for 39 years before retiring.

Peter was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain and a life member of IAV Post #1, VFW Post #451 and the Elks Lodge, all of Lorain.

Peter enjoyed golfing and bowling and participated in many area leagues in both sports. In 1938, he participated in the Lorain City Playground Championship Boxing matches at Central Park in Lorain. He played fastpitch softball in the Ohio Big Eight League for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Dorothy Smith-Costello (nee Balzer), children Gregory Costello (Tracy) of Toledo, Joan Ross of Avon Lake, Allison Von Weber of Sullivan, Constance Smith of Lorain, Joel Smith of Lorain, Jonathan Smith (Rose) of Amherst and Jeffrey Smith (Pam) of Lorain, grandchildren Nicholas and Adam Costello, Gretchen Ross, Emily and Andrew Moore, Natalie Cordy (Chris), Jamie Mireles, Jacqueline, Jennifer, Jessica, Jenna, Joshua, Jeremy, Justin and Megan Smith, 5 great grandchildren and sister Madeline Szabo of Vermilion. He was preceded in death by Dorothy's son James R. Smith, parents Peter and Madaline Costello (nee Churcillo), sisters Pauline Crowl, Mary Rossi and Frances Salatnai and brothers Pat, Steve, Phillip, Charles, Joseph and John Costello.

The family will receive friends Thursday 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the IAV Post #1 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
