Harvey B. ''Slim'' Smith, 82

Mr. Smith was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on September 19, 1928, the son of the late Harvey B and Erma Margaret (nee Powell) Smith. He was a 1946 graduate of Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, West Virginia.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He earned the World War II Victory Medal. He has been a resident of Lorain since 1952.
He retired from U.S. Steel as a #2 seamless turn foreman on October 31, 1983.
Mr. Smith was a member of Christian Temple Disciples of Christ, Lorain, serving as secretary, deacon and trustee. He also was a member of the AARP #3318 serving as president, treasurer, and secretary. He was a Boy Scout Leader with Troop #350. He enjoyed trains, restoring antique sewing machines, gardening and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary E. (nee Fleming) Smith; sons David W. (Patricia) Smith of Brandon, FL, Gilbert L. (Cyndi) Smith of Crestwood, KY and Paul H. (Tracey) Smith of Oberlin, grandchildren Graciano Etrata, Louis Etrata, Dawn Smith, Cody Smith, 13 great grandchildren and sister Lois McAfee of Wheeling, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Carol England.
Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 2, 2011 in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Bradley J. Donahue, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens Avon, with full military honors provided jointly by the American Legion Post # 30 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 451.
