Edward J. Wnek, 88, US Army Veteran, Avid Baseball Fan

He was born January 13, 1923 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Ed served with the US Army during World War II as a corporal in Battery B 787th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He saw action in Holland, France, Belgium, Ardennes, and Rhineland and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.
Ed worked at US Steel in Lorain for 43 years as a crane operator and pipe fitter before retiring.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain, the church Holy Name Society and the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain. Ed enjoyed fishing, woodworking, word search puzzles and photography.
Ed was an avid baseball fan and he is now rounding 3rd and heading home.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Jeanette Wnek (nee Gorski), children Diane Luby (John) of Willard and Dale Wnek of Amherst, grandchildren Edward Luby (Susan) of Lancaster, Danielle Gulden (David) of Fairview Park, Dale Wnek II of Amherst and Shawn Wnek (Jackie) of Tucson, Arizona, great grandchildren Grant Luby, Erin Luby, Lauren Gulden and Julianne Wnek. He was preceded in death by his parents Roman and Henrietta Wnek (nee Lasko), stepmother Kundagunda Wnek, brothers Walter Waynek, Stanley Wnek and Bruno Wanek and sisters Helen Zalesky and Sister Mary Wnek.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion #30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
