Helen P. Lyons, 71, Accomplished Cook and Enjoyed Spending Time with Her Family

Photo of Helen P. Lyons Helen P. Lyons, (nee Coleman), passed away Friday, March 25th, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

She was born in Beaver Valley, Pennsylvania on May 23, 1939 and had been a resident of Northern Ohio since her childhood.

Helen was the proprietor of The Office tavern in Lorain for many years; she had previously been employed as a driver, and later as a supervisor by the United Parcel Service in Elyria and she held the distinction of being the first female driver at that facility. She retired in 1997 following a career that spanned 23 years with the shipper.

Helen was a member of the Knights of St. John as well as the Ladies Auxiliaries of American Legion Posts # 30 of Lorain and # 397 of Vermilion.

She was an accomplished cook who enjoyed gardening, shopping, and spending time with her family. She was also an avid fan of the Game Show Television Network as well as Court T.V.

She is survived by her son John T. Bennett, III of Vermilion, by daughters Peggy Bennett and Lisa Usselman both of Lorain, by grandchildren Kim, Mike, Dan, J.T., Zachary, and Eddie, along with fourteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Christina (nee Hesse) Coleman, and by brothers Lee, Paul, and Gary.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. & 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend Mr. John Slatcoff, Permanent Deacon representing St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

Donations may be made in Helen's memory to the American Cancer Society.
