Mary E. Jacobs, 77, Advocate for Communication for the Deaf in Education

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 18, 1933 and had been a resident of Lorain for more than 60 years.
Mary was a parishioner of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church in Lorain. She was also an advocate for communication for the deaf in education in Ohio; her efforts helped pave the way for numerous reforms which continue to benefit the hearing impaired students in Ohio schools.
Mrs. Jacobs was active in Democratic politics at the local, state, and national levels. In her free time she enjoyed camping, needlepoint, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed cartoons with a special fondness for Scooby-Doo.
Survivors include her son John M. Jacobs of Sandusky, her daughter Julianne M. Julie Smarr (Shane) of Sheffield Township, grandsons Matthew of Sandusky and Patrick of Sheffield Township, and great granddaughters Annie and Sarah.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband John S. Jacobs in 2009 and by her parents.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will begin Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. Reverend John C. Retar, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
