Joseph Sislowski, 88, WWII Veteran, US Steel Retiree

Joe was a World War II veteran who served in the US Army 727th Amphibious Assault Unit earning 4 bronze stars along with the Philippine Liberation star and World War II Victory Medal.
He retired from USX in Lorain in 1983 after 43 years, 28 years as a machinist in the #1 Machine Shop and 15 years as an analyst in the Maintenance Planning Office. He also managed the former Croatian Club Lanes on Grove Avenue in the 60s and 70s.
Joe was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, a life member of AMVETS #47 in Lorain and the Croatian Fraternal Union. He greatly enjoyed golfing and gardening and was well known for his great tomatoes and his generosity in giving them away. Joe played guard on the 1939 Lorain High School championship football team which was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame and was co-captain on the 1940 team.
He is survived by his sister Theresa Kalo (John) of Mentor, daughter Karen Rodachy (Bob) of Amherst, sons Donald Sislowski of Latham, New York, David Sislowski (Julie Babcock) of Caledonia, Wisconsin and Mark Sislowski (Julie) of Hilliard, grandchildren John Sislowski of Troy, New York, Jennifer Rodachy and Jeffrey Rodachy, both of Cleveland, Lukas, Isaak, Kaleb, Rebekah and Mikaela Sislowski, all of Hilliard and great grandson Aaron Sislowski of Troy, New York. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Mary (nee Pribanic) in 1997, parents Stephan and Anna Scislowski (nee Soboleski), brothers Andrew, Steve, Ben, Frank and Ted and sisters Anna Emerich, Jean Chopcinski and Louise Turton.
The family will receive friends Thursday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Additional viewing will be on Friday from 9:00 am until the time of the mass of Christian burial at 9:30 am at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
