Joseph Jerrome, 84, BF Goodrich Retiree

Photo of Joseph Jerrome Joseph S. Jerrome, 84, of Lorain, died suddenly on Monday June 6, 2011 in the emergency room at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

He was born March 19, 1927 in Elm Grove, West Virginia and had resided in the Lorain area since 1951.

Joseph was a 1946 graduate of Wheeling High School in Wheeling, West Virginia where he played football, basketball and was a member of the 1946 state champion track team.

He served with the US Army as a Tech 5 at the end of World War II and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was awarded the WW II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation of Japan medal. After he was discharged from the Army, Joe attended West Virginia University where he played basketball and football.

Joe worked at BF Goodrich/PolyOne in Avon Lake retiring in 1992 after 25 years. Prior to that he worked at National Tube in Lorain and sold life insurance for National Life Company.

He was a member of Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church and a member of the former Delaware Avenue Methodist Church in Lorain where he taught Sunday school and coached basketball.

Joe was a member of the American Legion #30 in Lorain. He enjoyed gardening and sports and was a big Cleveland sports fan. Joe played golf, softball and basketball in leagues for the BF Goodrich team. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. An accomplished writer, Joe wrote 7 books of poems and had several published.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years Rose Ann Jerrome (nee Kaiser), children Dorothy Ann Kitchen (David) of Lorain, Sue Wyszynski of Chagrin Falls, Stephen Curtis Jerrome (Deborah) of Grafton, twin children Scott Joseph Jerrome (Daria) of Pickerington and Shelia Davies (Chris Marshall) of Vermilion, grandchildren Kevin E. Kitchen, Jennifer King, Daria Cayne, Alexis Suter, Katherine Jerrome, Carli Wyszynski, Larissa Jerrome, Curtis Davies, Matthew Jerrome and Sonya Jerrome and great grandchildren McKenzie King, Regan King, Brayden Kitchen, Delaney Kitchen, Camryn Cayne, Rosalee Kitchen and Wesley Cayne.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Lee Jerrome (nee Miller) in 1970, parents William Curtis Jerrome and Mary Evelyn Jerrome (nee Evans), granddaughter Kristin Wyszynski, brother Charles Jerrome, sisters Alma Lou Weigand and Suzanne Jerrome, son-in-law Tom Wyszynski and step-son Jerry Hinton.

The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Additional visiting will be Saturday from 10:30 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Rd, Lorain. The Rev. Gregory Sellers, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date at Halcyon Hills Memorial Park in Wheeling, West Virginia.
