Mary Strukely, 94, Honored Retiree of the Lorain City Water Dept
Mary V. Strukely (nee Stanko), 94, of Lorain, died Tuesday June 21, 2011 at the Hearthstone at Lorain after a brief illness.
She was born on November 11, 1916 in Lorain and had lived on Oberlin Avenue in Lorain for 55 years before becoming a resident at Hearthstone in July 2003.
Mary graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1934B. She married her husband John on November 23, 1940. During World War II, Mary lived and worked in Boston, Massachusetts while her husband served in the US Navy. Her husband passed away in 1957 and Mary spent the next 15 years raising her three children.
In 1964, she began working for the city of Lorain in the Service Director’s Office. In 1967, she transferred to the Water Department as secretary to the Director. She retired in 1984 and Mayor Joseph Zahorec proclaimed May 10, 1984 as Mary Strukely Day in honor of her service to the city. She was also recognized by the General Assembly of the Senate of the State of Ohio for her outstanding service to the city of Lorain.
Mary was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain and the Greek Catholic Union #125. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, classical music and Broadway musicals.
She is survived by her children Jeanne Gendics (Martin) of Vermilion, John "Terry" Strukely (Jeannette) of Elyria and Susan Adams of Vermilion, grandchildren Brad Gendics (Jennifer) of Amherst, Scott Gendics (Holly) of Vermilion and Christopher Gendics of Boston, Massachusetts, Julia Strukely of Washington, DC, Janet Dziak (Josh) of North Ridgeville, Amanda Hoffman of Vermilion and Matthew Hoffman of Columbus, 10 great grandchildren and sisters Helen Petrus of Boardman and Marge Skrepich of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her husband John Stukely in 1957, parents George and Ann Stanko (nee Opalenik), brother George Stanko and sister Ann Demyan.
