Alice E. Kucirek, 94, Avid Cleveland Indians and Omar Vizquel fan
Alice E. Kucirek (nee Burcl), 94, of Lorain, died peacefully and surrounded by her family on Monday August 1, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain from the effects of a massive stroke.
She was born October 30, 1916 in Outcrop, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain since she was 5 years of age.
Alice attended Clearview High School where she lettered in varsity basketball. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Troxtle Manufacturing in Elyria assembling bicycle seats
Alice was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township and a member of the former St. Vitus Croatian Catholic Church in Lorain. She enjoyed cooking, baking, cleaning, playing cards and bingo, growing African Violets and eating tomatoes, cucumbers and vinegar. For many years the neighborhood in which she lived would meet after dinner to play baseball during the summer months and Alice was the pitcher on her team. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and Omar Vizquel fan and enjoyed having her family stop by her home to visit.
She is survived by her daughter with whom she made her home Marlene Humphries (companion Jack Yaneris who also was a caregiver to Alice) of Lorain, daughter Delores "Dodo" (John) Opalenik) of Lorain and son Henry A. (Anna) Kucirek III of North Ridgeville, grandchildren Elizabeth "Beth" (Carl) Inman of Avon, Aliceson B. Humphries of Lorain, Natalie N. Humphries of Lorain, Kathy R. (Tom) Knick of Amherst, Henry A. (Cristy) Kucirek IV of Lorain, Eric K. Kucirek of Lorain, Matthew T. Kucirek of Las Vegas, Nevada and Justin M. (Ember) Kucirek of Lorain, great grandchildren Ben and Alex Inman, Marlee and Ridge Mitchell, Corey, Kaitlyn and Megan Knick and Eric, Tyler, Cole, Austin, Evan, Isabella and Sophia Kucirek, , step grandchildren Vickie McCann, Patty Hjerpe and John R. Opalenik and sister Christine Dirda of North Ridgeville and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry A. Kucirek II on Nov. 21, 1994, parents Ferdinand and Anna Burcl (nee Pitnock), great grandchildren Henry A. Kucirek V, Cailin Leah Inman and Aimee Inman, son-in-law Reginald H. Humphries in 1987, brothers Frank Burtze, John Burcl, Joe Burtze, Daniel Burcl and Edward Burcl and sisters Mary Sabo, Anna Majzun, Stella Pavlich and an infant brother.
The family will receive friends Thursday 4-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria Twp. The Rev. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
