William L. Bigrigg, 82, Sports Enthusiast

Photo of William L. Bigrigg William L. Bigrigg, 82, of Amherst, died Wednesday August 24, 2011 at the Hearthstone at Lorain.

He was born March 31, 1929 in California, Pennsylvania and moved to Lorain in 1954. He had resided in Amherst for the past 11 years.

Bill served with the US Navy during WWII as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Salisbury Sound. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal. Later he re-enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and received the WWII Victory Medal.

Bill worked at BF Goodrich in Avon Lake as a welder retiring in 1991.

Bill was a life member of VFW Post #451 in Lorain and the Lorain Masonic Lodge. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, bowling, golfing, softball and flag football. Bill was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He and his wife Barbara enjoyed dancing at various social clubs in the area.

He is survived by his children William A. (Mary Ann) Bigrigg and Barbara D. (William) Przybylowicz, all of Amherst, grandchildren Nicholas (Beth) Bigrigg of Davenport, Iowa, Michael Bigrigg of Lorain, Hilary (Shaun) Duffala of Elyria and Ashley Przybylowicz of Amherst, great grandson Logan Bigrigg and sister Mary Ellen Novak of Amherst. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara L. Bigrigg (nee Kayatin), parents George and Sarah Bigrigg (nee Wilson) and brothers Ed, Art, and Henry Bigrigg.

Private family services were held Friday. The Rev. Christopher Robinson, chaplain of New Life Hospice, officiated. Burial was in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30, both of Lorain, conducted military honors.

Arrangements were under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain.
