Carol Arlyn Gelman, 91, Teacher

She was born Carol Waisbrenon May 30, 1920 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Her parents were Dr. Benjamin and Laura Waisbren.

She attended Stephens College in Columbia Missouri, and then the University of Wisconsin where she earned a degree in economics. She served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographic technician and earned the rank of Corporal. She served in London during the period of the "buzz bombs", and she was decorated with two overseas service bars, as well as many other service medals.

In 1946 she married Jack Edward Gelman and they raised three children in Lorain, Ohio. After the untimely death of her husband in 1962 she earned a masters degree in Reading Education from Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Gelman taught reading at Durling Elementary School in the Clearview School District.

She retired in 1980 and moved from Lorain to Coconut Creek, Florida where she continued to teach part-time and was an avid bridge player. Mrs. Gelman loved to read history and was a keen observer of current affairs. In more recent times she enjoyed "surfing the net."

Mrs. Gelman successfully defeated a major disability due to paralytic polio that lasted most of her life. She overcame this and other major challenges with tenacity, and died peacefully at the age of 91. Carol was self-effacing, beautifully organized, and always relentlessly determined. She was a gifted teacher who changed many lives through education.

She is survived by her three children, Miriam Knight,Dr. Benjamin Gelman (Diane) and Judith Mandile (Patrick), six grandchildren (Brigitte Knight, Jacob Gelman,Emily Gelman Szucs, Allyson Gelman, Charles Mandile, Laura Mandile),and her brother, Dr. Burton A. Waisbren Sr. (Florence).

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer and Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5thStreet in Lorain, followed by interment at Salem Cemetery, North Ridge Road in Sheffield Township. Rabbi Susan Stone will officiate. Full Military Burial rites will be provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the VFW Post 451.

A reception will be held afterward at the residence o Mrs. Barbara Evenchik at College Park Manor Apts,143 East College Street in Oberlin Ohio.
