Michael D. Long, 47, Assoc. Director of Alumni Affairs
Michael D. Long, 47, of Frankfort, Kentucky and formerly of Lorain, died unexpectedly on Friday October 14, 2011 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 22, 1963 in Lorain, Ohio and had resided in Frankfort since January of this year. He had moved from Lorain to Louisville, Kentucky in 1998.
Michael was a graduate of St. Peter School in Lorain and a 1982 graduate of Lorain Catholic High School where he was in band. He attended Lorain County Community College for 1 � years and then served with the US Coast Guard. He earned a Bachelor Degree Magna Cum Laude in Business Administration/Management at Sullivan University in Kentucky.
Michael worked at Sullivan University in Louisville, Kentucky as the Associate Director of Alumni Affairs for the past two years. Prior to that he worked at the Kentucky Ford Truck Plant and the Lorain and Avon Lake Ford Plants working a total of 17 years at all three facilities.
As a youth, Michael enjoyed theater and participated in the Lorain Palace Theater Youth Theater program and starred as Huckleberry Finn. He was a member the Young Republicans in Lorain County. He served as a trustee on the American Croatian Club board in Lorain. He currently served on the board and was a docent at the Thomas Edison House in Louisville for the past 10 years.
He is survived by his children Christopher M. Long (fiancé Debra Jordan) with the US Army stationed in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Michele Long of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, fiancé Karen Lynn and her son Jared C. Blackburn, both of Frankfort, Kentucky, his dog Smokey, parents Richard T. and Antoinette Long (nee Trenkl) of Lorain, sister Annette Dillon (Timothy) of Vermilion, OH, brother Dan Long of Elyria OH, sister Susan Plas (Justin) of Akron, OH and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas J. Long in 2009.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where VFW Post #451/American Legion #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
