Mary Simko, 94, Excellent Seamstress

Photo of Mary Simko Mary Simko, (nee Chochol), age 94, of Avon, passed away in the early morning hours of October 19th, 2011.

She was born in Lorain on October 6, 1917 and was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1936-A. Mary had been a resident of Avon since1982.

Mrs. Simko was the proprietor of Mary’s Ice Cream Parlor which was formerly located on North Ridge Road across from the Sheffield Center.

She was a life-time member of Ss. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Sheffield Township and was a charter member of The Ruth Naomi Altar Guild there.

Mary was acknowledged as a devoted wife and mother who loved spending time with her family and who also enjoyed cooking large meals for them. She was an excellent seamstress who enjoyed sewing in her free time; additional interests included flower gardening with a special passion for roses.

She is survived by her daughters Elaine Marie Furlich (Albert) of Sheffield Village, Judith Suzanne Szabo of Avon, Sylvia Jane Price (Frank) of Amherst, Naomi Ruth Kinzel of Bay Village, and son Robert John Simko residing in Cooksburg, Pennsylvania. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband John Simko, Jr. on June 14, 1980, by her parents John and Susan (nee Mraz) Chochol, by sons-in-law Steve Szabo and Kenneth Kinzel, by brothers John and Andrew Chochol, by sisters Julia Bendik, Ruth Mack, and Susie Chochol (in infancy), by granddaughter Lynnette Marie Schmitz (nee Furlich), and by grandsons Kurtis Kinzel, Jeremy Simko, and Alan Hook.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Friends may also call on Saturday in Ss. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church (1500 Lincoln Boulevard, Sheffield Township) from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:00 A.M. The Reverend Edgar Anthony, Pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions to either Ss. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church or to the New Life Hospice.
