Mary H. Davis Downie, 88, Enjoyed Bowling & Dancing

Photo of Mary H. Davis Downie Mary H. Davis Downie (nee Knipper), 88, mother of eight, entered eternal peace on Saturday October 29, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center after a lengthy illness.

Mary was born on January 22, 1923 in Lorain to the late Aloysius and Anna (Thesing) Knipper. She was second of four children.

Mary graduated from Lorain High School in 1940. She worked for National Bank and the Lorain Auditors Office. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, and crossword puzzles. She was a member of Nativity BVM Church, and was a Eucharistic Minister for over 20 years at the former St. Joseph Church in Lorain.

In 1946, she married William J. Davis of Lorain.

In 1983, she married Hugh Downie of Lorain.

Mary is survived by her children, James (Jean) Davis of Detroit, Michael (Judy) Davis of Lorain, Thomas (Anne) Davis of Lorain, Mark (Carol) Davis of New London, Jeanne Weingarth (Michael) of Zanesville Robert (Maryalice) Davis of Lorain, William Davis (Joseph Knapicius) of Lakewood, and stepchildren Hugh (Eileen) Downie Jr., Catherine Gombach, Laura (Frank) Leon, Margaret (Bob) Leghart, Eileen (Hal) Minnich, Rosemary (Tom) Hesmond and Frederick (Sharron) Downie; sister Alma Feeley and many grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband William J. Davis in 1973, her second husband Hugh Downie in 1993, infant son John Davis in 1950, brothers Robert (Violet) Knipper in 2008 and Aloysius (Dolores) Knipper in 2009.

The entire family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to the caring staff at Kingston of Vermilion.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday November 1, 2011 from 4 PM - 8 PM at Reichlin -Cooley Funeral Home 2920 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-3255.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 2, 2011 beginning with closing prayers in the funeral home at 11:00 AM., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at Nativity BVM Church, 418 West 15th Street in Lorain, officiated by Rev. Robert Glepko. Christian burial service will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to a charity of your choice.
