Jean R. Fields, 92, RN & Avid Golfer

Jean was born in Elyria on June 21, 1919 and had been a resident of Elyria for 40 years prior to relocating to Oberlin.
She was a 1937 graduate of Elyria High School and a 1941 graduate of the M.B. Johnson School of Nursing. Following her graduation she was employed as a Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric Department at City Hospital in Cleveland. In 1943 she enlisted in the United States Army where she fulfilled duty assignments as a field nurse attached to the 101st EVAC Hospital holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant; Jean was the recipient of the European Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars as well as the World War II Victory Medal. She was a life member of American Legion Post # 12 of Elyria.
Upon her return from military service she worked as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at both Elyria Memorial Hospital and Allen Memorial Hospital; following her retirement, she served in the same capacity on a part-time basis at Wellington Hospital.
Mrs. Fields was an avid golfer who was a member and former club champion at the Oberlin Golf Club. She was also a member of the Greater Cleveland Women’s Golf Association who enjoyed visiting and competing on a variety of affiliate courses throughout northeast Ohio.
In addition to golf, Jean liked dogs, and enjoyed league bowling and playing cards in her free time.
Survivors include her son Jeff Fields (Linda) residing in Lagrange, granddaughter Laura Fields of Alexandria, Virginia, grandson Brian T. Fields (Tiffany) of Grafton, andadopted exchange student Lou Castro (Sara) of Melbourne, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank L. Fields in 1976, by her son Michel D. Fields in infancy in 1949, by her parents Matthew and Katherine (nee Schuster) Roth, and by a brother Matthew.
Graveside services with full military honors conducted by VFW Post # 1079 of Elyria will take place on Saturday November 12th at 11:00 a.m. in Westwood Cemetery, 455 Morgan Street, Oberlin. Plans for an additional celebration of Jean’s life will be announced and are tentatively being planned for the summer of 2012.
