John A. Damasiewicz, 90, Avid Pittsburgh Steelers Fan

Photo of John A. Damasiewicz John A. Damasiewicz, 90, of Lorain, died Monday November 28, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 19, 1921 in Windber, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain since 1959.

John served with the US Navy as a Gunner's Mate aboard Merchant Marine Ships during World War II. He was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and European-African Ribbon.

John worked at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant as a Wet Sander in the Paint Department for 27 years retiring in 1986. Prior to that, he worked as a Coal Miner in Windber, PA for 21 years.

While living in Pennsylvania, he played baseball and pitched his team to the city championship. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed polka dancing and bowling having bowled in leagues at Croatian Lanes and Rebman Recreation.

He was an active member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church in Lorain.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jean M. Damasiewicz (nee Zack), children: Dr. Judy Randolph (Richard) of Westlake, John R. Damasiewicz (Susan) of Wakeman, Janet Courtney of Livonia, Michigan, Jeannie Parrish (David) of Westlake, James Damasiewicz (Helen A.) of Avon and Jeff R. Damasiewicz of Avon Lake, 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Julia Damasiewicz (nee Sprintz) and 4 siblings.

The family will receive friends Friday 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. The Rev. John C. Retar, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
