Walter M. "Bud" Ross, 87, WWII Victory Medal Recipient

Photo of Walter M. Walter M."Bud" Ross, 87, of Lorain, died Wednesday February 15, 2012 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born November 12, 1924 in Huntington, West Virginia and had resided in Lorain since he was a teenager.

Bud served with the US Navy during WWII as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Wasatch and he received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He later served with the Navy from 1950-1951 and was stationed in Guam.

Bud worked as a Maintenance Mechanic at BF Goodrich in Avon Lake for 35 years before retiring.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain. While he and his wife Irene celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a mass at the church, Bud surprised his family by being baptized a Catholic during the ceremony.

Although Bud dropped out of high school to serve his country in the Navy during WWII, he obtained his high school diploma alongside his grandson Ben at Lorain Admiral King High School in 2002.

Bud enjoyed working on cars, square dancing and travel.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Irene Ross (nee Bors), children Wayne Ross (Dorothy nee Kutney) of Eaton, Diana Gradisek (Robert) of Avon and Terry Ross (Ann Withall) of New Paultz, New York, grandchildren Amanda and Ben Gradisek and Jennifer, Michael and Nathan Ross, great grandchild Ryder Ross and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen D. Ross and Annie L. Ross (nee Cumpston), brother Stephen D. Ross, Jr and sisters Elizabeth Jones and Betty Jane Heffley.

The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the DAV Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
