Gervase J. Sherry , 89, World War II US Army veteran

Photo of Gervase J.  Sherry Gervase J. Sherry, 89, passed away Friday, February 17th at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Ebensburg, PA on Christmas day, 1922. His parents put him in his big brothers wagon and said Santa Claus brought him.

He was a World War II US Army veteran having served in Europe.

Gervase moved with his family to Lorain in 1955 to work at the Parma plant of General Motors. He retired from there in 1985 after 30 years.

He was actively involved in the Lorain Emergency Police. He was an usher and server at St. John the Baptist Church and drove the school bus for many years. He volunteered for the American Red Cross after he retired. He loved helping his family and neighbors. He was currently a parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini Parish.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, LaRue (nee Randall), his son Charles Sherry (Pauline) of Amherst, his daughters, Christine Sherry of Sheffield Village, Denise Sherry of Telford, TN, and Jeanne Norton of Lorain, and daughter-in-law, Donna Sherry of Taylorsville, KY. He's survived by seven grandchildren, Rosemary Tompkins (Gary), Michael Sherry (Jing), Donald "Jeff" Sherry, Erika Cantu (Clarence), Timothy Norton, Matthew Norton, and Deborah Norton and five Zsigray step-grandchildren, Robert, Jamie, Donald, Timothy, and David. He is also survived by his four great grandchildren, Alexis Sherry, Devontae Bowens, Gabrielle Cantu, and Samantha Cantu and his great great grandson, Avion Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents Gervase A. and Helen (nee Dias) Sherry, his son David, his daughter-in-law Bernice, his son-in-law, David Weaver and his four brothers, Gerald, Donald, Paul, and William, all of PA.

The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4, 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, 2143 Homewood Dr, Lorain. The Rev. John Retar, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the DAV Post #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
