Craig W. Johnson, 71, Veteran of the US Navy

Craig W. Johnson, 71, of Vermilion, died Sunday February 19, 2012 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 3, 1940 in Cleveland and had resided in Vermilion for the past 12 years moving from Amherst.

Craig was a veteran of the US Navy and served on a destroyer escort ship in the Mediterranean in the early 60's.

He worked at the Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain as an Inspector for 37 years retiring in 1997.

Craig was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lorain and a life member of AMVETS Post #22 in Vermilion. He was a very caring person who enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children's Special Olympics events. He enjoyed bingo, horseracing and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years Suzanne E. Johnson, children Susan M. Brown (James) of Lorain, Craig A. Johnson of Grafton, Kenneth W. Johnson of Sandusky, Connie L. Shook (Rudy) of Vermilion and Eric A. Johnson (Wendy) of Elyria, grandchildren Jason Haws, Michael Haws, Suzanna Gudice, Kevin Shook and Rhonda Justice, 5 great grandchildren, brother Kenneth M. Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife Rosemary T. Johnson (nee Sopko) on October 21, 1997, parents Oscar A. and Elsie Johnson (nee Engelbrecht) and sister Ruth Eddy.

The family will receive friends Tuesday 5-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing times will be on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 5100 Ashland Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Gary Georgi, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the DAV Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
