Clare Elizabeth Burgett, 90, Avid Swimmer

Photo of Clare Elizabeth Burgett Clare Elizabeth Burgett, 90, (nee Price) of Lorain passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Avon Oaks Nursing Facility in Avon following a long illness.

Clare was born on November 15, 1921 in Lorain, the daughter of James A. and Oliva M. (nee Theobald) Price. She was a lifelong resident of Lorain.

She was also a lifelong member of the former St. Mary Catholic Church, now known as Mary Mother of God Parish in Lorain. She attended daily Mass and was very active in her faith.

She graduated from St. Mary Academy (high school), class of 1939. She then graduated from St. John School of Nursing – Cleveland, OH in 1942. She
was the secretary-treasurer of her class.

Clare became a registered nurse and began her career at St. John Hospital
emergency room from 1942 – 1947, earning the position of head nurse. She
later worked at St. Joseph emergency room in Lorain from 1947 - 1948. In
1971, she became Director of Health Services for the Vermilion City School
District retiring in 1986.

She was a charter member of the Lorain County Epilepsy Board, a member of
the Lorain chapter of the Lakeland Woman’s Club, Ohio Retired Teachers
Association as well as the American Association of University Women. She was
also a member of the Lorain Towne Club, the Women’s Guild of St. Mary Parish
and the St. Mary Altar & Rosary Society. Clare volunteered at her church, various high school committees, the Lorain St. Joseph Free Clinic, a reading tutor at Lorain’s Public Library, and was a Cub Scout den mother. She was a retreat participant in the Lorain Chapter of the Cursillo organization. She was also the recipient of the 1989 United Way “Volunteer of the Year” Award.

Clare was an avid swimmer, regularly swimming one mile. She also enjoyed
traveling with her husband Loren, gatherings with family and friends,
musicals at Oberlin College, walking, boating and the beautiful Lake Erie
sunsets.

Clare is survived by her daughter Maryclare (Burgett) Krusing, sons Lawrence A. Burgett, James P. Burgett, Donald J. Burgett all of Lorain, Thomas J. Burgett of Copley, OH and their spouses; 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and sister Mary (Price) Warner of Lorain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Loren
A. Burgett in 1999 and brothers John J. Price, James A. Price and sister
Regina Buse (nee Price).

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain concluding with a Christian Wake Service at 8:00 p.m. led by Deacon Lou Muldonado.

Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 9:15 am with prayers at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial in the Mary Mother of God Parish, corner 8th Ave. and Reid Ave. with Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Joseph
Homeless Shelter, 317 W. 15th St., Lorain, OH 44052 and/or the Monastery of
the Poor Clares, 3501 Rocky River Dr., Cleveland, OH 44111.

The family would like to thank the associates of Avon Oaks Nursing
Facility and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their loving care.
