Thomas R. Akosi, 59, Accomplished Musician
Thomas R. Akosi, age 59, of Vermilion, passed away Saturday March 31st, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Lorain on May 6, 1952 and was a 1970 graduate of Lorain High School; Tom went on to attend the Electronic Technology Institute from which he graduated in 1972.
He was the owner of Akosi Electronics from 1972 to 1977 and had also worked at Cedar Point as well as the Ohio Vending Machine, Inc.
Mr. Akosi was an accomplished, self-taught musician who played piano, drums, and the guitar and ultimately fulfilled a life-long dream of performing professionally on a full time basis throughout northern Ohio. He was the leader of many bands over the years including the Beaver Creek Band, the Harvest Band, and the Keymotion Band. He also performed acoustic music as a soloist, in duets, and by hosting jam nights.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years Jan (nee Hnatiak), by his daughter Rebecca Marie “Becky” Akosi of Vermilion, by his brother David Akosi (Pat) of Lorain, by his sister Karyn Ferraro (Ed) of Lorain, and brother-in-law Steven M. Hnatiak (Dorine) residing in Akron. He also leaves nieces Cara Gomez (David), of Lorain, Kim Kelly (Frank) of Elyria, Katie Minneci (Tim) of Dublin, and nephews Steven W. Hnatiak of Boise, ID., Michael Hnatiak (Liz) of Sylvania, and Michael T. Ferraro of Lorain. Other survivors include great nieces Elexiah Hnatiak, Ireland Hnatiak, and Lucy, along with his great nephew Nathan Gomez.
He was preceded in death by his father Thomas W. Akosi, by his mother Marie J. Akosi (nee Ingrassia), by his infant brother Thomas, and his parents-in-law Julia Hnatiak and Paul Hnatiak, Jr.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m.in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Ronald Brickner, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
