Adolph R. ''Audie'' Ravnikar, 90

Photo of Adolph R. ''Audie'' Ravnikar Adolph R. "Audie" Ravnikar, age 90, of Amherst Township, passed away Thursday April 5, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Lorain on February 4, 1922 and had been a resident of Amherst Township for the past 60 years. Audie was a 1940 graduate of Lorain High School and later studied at the Case Institute in Cleveland.

He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard where he fulfilled duty assignments as an Electronic Technician’s Mate during World War II; he was the recipient of the American Area Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Ravnikar was employed as a Cost Analyst at United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works for 35 years retiring in 1980. He was one of the founders and a charter member of the U.S. Steel Employee’s Credit Union; he remained active as a member of the credit committee of that organization as it transitioned into the Lormet Community F.C.U.

Audie was a long-time parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Lorain; he was a life member of the Lorain Slovenian Home and was acknowledged as its Slovenian Man of the Year in 1979. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the SNPJ Lodge, and was also a member of the KSKJ Fraternal Lodge as well as the American Mutual Life Association.

A life-long subway alumnus of the University Notre Dame, it is estimated that he attended in excess of 250 Fighting Irish football games during his lifetime.

Survivors include his son Ric Ravnikar of Amherst Township, and daughters Kathleen (Thomas) Umbaugh of Pensacola, Florida, Jane Bocketti of Manlius, New York, and Joyce (Mark) Ravnikar-Kulyk residing in Fairview, Pennsylvania. He also leaves four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Audie was preceded in death by his wife Lillian (nee Tomazin) in 2007, and by his parents Frank and Mary (nee Tomazic).

Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend John C Retar, Pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either the Congregation of the Holy Cross, P.O. Box 771, Notre Dame, IN 46556 or to the Slovene Home for the Aged, 18621 Neff Road, Cleveland, OH 44119.
