Michael Koren, 82, Avid Bowler

Photo of Michael  Koren Michael Koren, 82, of Lorain, died Thursday April 19, 2012 at the home of his close friends Michael and Karen Morrow while under the care of Crossroads Hospice after a six month illness.

He was born October 30, 1929 in Czechoslovakia. When the Communists overtook Czechoslovakia, Michael fled to West Germany and lived in displaced person camps for 27 months until coming to the United States and moving to Lorain in 1950.

Michael worked at US Steel in Lorain as a Quality Control Inspector in the Rolling Mill for 34 years retiring in 1989. Prior to that, he worked at the B&O Railroad for 4 years in the Car Shop Paint Department.

Michael was an avid bowler and bowled in the Golden Agers and Slovak Social Leagues at Slovak Lanes and the Consolidated "C" League at Rebman Recreation.

He was a life member of the American Slovak Club and United Polish Club, both in Lorain.

He is survived by his brother Juraj "George" Koren, niece Renata Gorasova and nephew Tomas Koren, all of Slovakia, close friends and caregivers Michael and Karen Morrow, Jeanie and Jonathan Carter and Brandon, Joey and Kayla Carter, all of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his parents Jan and Zuzana Koren (nee Plutkova).

The family will receive friends Monday 5-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am. The Rev. Mark Telepak,, chaplain of Crossroads Hospice, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
