Clyde E. Matthews , 88, Man of Faith

Mr. Matthews was born in Lorain on February 2, 1924, the son of the late Agustus E. and Elva Mae (nee Cheney) Matthews. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Lorain High School class of 1942.
He was an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain. He was baptized on Easter in 1938 and joined the church at 22nd and Reid Avenue currently known as Faith United Methodist Church on May 20, 1945. He served as Youth Fellowship Counselor for 30 years, Sunday School Teacher and song leader for high school age for over 20 years, Vacation Bible School song leader for 20 years, leader of the Kitchen Kuties for 20 years, and a member of the Singing Seniors, belonged to the United Methodist Men's Group, a member of the Council of Ministries Administrative Board, a representative between the church and the Boy Scouts, member of the Sunago and Faith Family Variety Groups.
Mr. Matthews was employed as an inspector/foreman at former American Crucible Products Co. in Lorain for well over 40 years and served as secretary/treasurer for his local workers union for many years.
He enjoyed gospel music, church activities, baseball, gardening, traveling and trains.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his son Kenneth (Kimberly) Matthews of Sheffield Village, granddaughter Valerie Wright Smith, great granddaughter Amber, brother, Earl Matthews of Lakewood, nieces and nephews Bobbie, Carolyn, Tim, Gary, Terry, great nieces and nephews Tina, Tim, Tony, Danny, Kristi, Melanie, Amanda, Rebekah, Gary, and Nicole.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Clara Mae (nee Schramm) Matthews on June 25, 2009.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
Funeral Services will be Friday, May 25, 2012 in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Karen Hollingsworth, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Garden, Avon.
