Edward J. Pandy , 96, US Army Veteran & Good Samaritan

He was born in Lorain on April 21, 1916 and remained a life-long resident of the city; Ed was a graduate of Lorain High School.
He went on to serve in the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a tank mechanic attached to the 755th Tank Battalion during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during conflict in Venefro Valley, Italy near Monte Cassino. In addition, he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater medal with two Bronze Stars, along with the American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Pandy was a Life member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was employed as a crane operator at U.S. Steel Corporation’s LorainCuyahoga Works. He ultimately retired as a Foreman in the Transportation Department following a career that spanned 42 years with the steel producer.
Mr. Pandy was a member and Trustee of the former 20th Street Methodist Church in Lorain. He later assisted in the construction of Christ United Methodist Church where he served as a church usher and was a member of the Men’s Club. Most recently, he was a member of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church.
He was a former member of the Black River Fire Department, as well as a long-time member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship.
In his free time Ed enjoyed organic vegetable gardening, traveling, and doing for others.
He is survived by his daughters Susan Johnson (Larry) of Avon Lake, Jeanine Walton (Michael) of Amherst, and Kathleen Griesser of Avon. He also leaves grandchildren Elizabeth Pietropalo (Vince), Megan Boatwright (Kyle), Ryan Walton, Sarah Drage (Michael), Jessica Griesser, and Ashley Griesser, and great grandchildren Tess Boatwright, Peter Boatwright, Louis Boatwright, Alex Pietropalo, and Gabriel Walton.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Amelia Amy (nee Boros) in 2004, by his parents Steve and Elizabeth (nee Szabo) Pandy, by a brother Stephen at birth, by a second brother Stephen, and by sisters Malvine Ursic, Ruth Lumsden, and Virginia MacDonald.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m.in the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road with Reverend Greg Sellers, Pastor of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park where military honors will be conducted by Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
