Robert D. Norberg, 89, Proud World War II Veteran

Robert D. Norberg, age 89, of Lorain, passed away peacefully on the evening of August 30, 2012 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph. He was born in Lorain on November 22, 1922 and remained a life-long resident of the city. Mr. Norberg attended Lorain High School and was a member of the varisty football team; he went on to graduate as a member of the Class of 1941-B.

He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Private First Class attached to the 220th Field Artillery Battalion serving throughout Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle-Eastern Service Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Bob was employed as a machinist in the # 1 Machine Shop at U.S. Steel’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works for more than four decades; he retired in 1983.

He was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter and was also a member of the parish’s Holy Name Society. Mr. Norberg was an accomplished stained glass artisan who enjoyed golf and league bowling in his free time. He also enjoyed attending luncheons with members of his high school graduating class.

He is survived by his daughter Linda Norberg residing in North Olmsted , daughter-in-law Marsha Norberg (nee Sofia ) of Amherst , by grandsons Matthew of Twinsburg and Daniel of Portland, Oregon, and great grandchildren Brennan Norberg and twins Carson and Madison Norberg,

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen (nee Francis) in 2006, by his son Donald in 2003, by his parents Carl and Ruth (nee Arbaugh) Norberg, and by his sister Lois Simonovich in 1988.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue , Lorain. Funeral services will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel on Wednesday; a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue. The Reverend Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
