Louis J. Kretovics, 85, WWII Veteran & Avid Golfer

A native and life-long resident of Lorain, he was a 1945 graduate of Lorain St. Mary’s High School.
Mr. Kretovics susequently enlisted in the United States Navy and fulfilled duty assignments as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Lyman K. Swenson; he was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Area Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Upon his return from military service, Lou attended the National Radio and Television School of Lorain as well as the Industrial Training Institute of Chicago. He was employed by Ohio Edison for 38 years retiring in 1985 as a foreman in the Substation Department.
Mr. Kretovics was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter and was also a member of the parish’s Holy Name Society. In addition, he was a member of Mullen-Murray Post # 451 of the V.F.W., as well as the Ohio Edison Men’s Club.
He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed rooting for the Cleveland Browns and Indians. Additional interests included learning about local and Ohio history, panning for gold, creating stained glass, and decorating Hungarian Easter Eggs.
Regarded as a devoted family man, Lou is survived by his children Kay Majesky (David of Lorain, Dale Kretovics (Debi) of Vermilion, and Jane Stephanchick of Greenbrier, Tennessee . He also leaves his grandchildren Carolyn, Daniel, and Matthew Majesky, Michael (Karen) and Kevin Kretovics, and T.I. and Kara Stephanchick, along with great grandchildren Austin and Brayden Kretovics. Other survivors include his sisters Lois Doolan of Coraopolis , Pennsylvania and Joanie Ross of Norton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Alice (nee Telatnik) in 2011, by his parents Louis and Ethel (nee Papay) Kretovics, and by his son-in-law Tim Stephanchick in March of 2012.
Lou’s family is most grateful to the staff and caregivers of Avon Oaks for their care and compassion over the past year and for the assistance and ministry of the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue , Lorain . Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter , 3501 Oberlin Avenue . Reverend Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Mullen-Murray Post # 451 of the V.F.W. and American Legion Post # 30.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to either the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern Ohio or to the Porter Fund in care of Avon Oaks Caring Community.
