Manuel A. Carrasquillo-Gonzalez Sr., 89, Loving Father & Grandfather

Photo of Manuel A.  Carrasquillo-Gonzalez Sr. Manuel A. Carrasquillo-Gonzalez, Sr., 89, of Elyria passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 in New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph, Lorain following an lengthy illness.

He was born May 5, 1923 in Utuado, Puerto Rico and came to Lorain in 1948 when he was one the original men recruited to work at the steel mill. He lived here until moving to Pinellas Park, Florida in 1975. He moved to Elyria in 2008.

Mr. Gonzalez retired in 1972 as an overhead crane operator from U.S. Steel Lorain Works. He worked there for 24 years.

Manuel was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1104, Lorain. He was an intelligent man who was self-educated. He enjoyed reading, singing and playing his harmonica, also casinos and watching novellas and game shows.

He will be dearly missed by his sons Manuel Antonio Gonzalez, Jr. of Elyria, Freddy Gonzalez of Lorain and David Gonzalez of Saint Petersburg, Florida; daughters Leida Gonzalez – Huey of Frisco, Texas, Elsie Garcia of Amherst Township; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Manuel was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Nereida “Neri” Gonzalez (née Figueroa) in 2007; a daughters Santita Figueroa Gonzalez and Daisy Gonzalez; brother Angel Gonzalez Carrasquillo; sister Margarita Gonzalez Sepulveda and step brothers and sisters.

His family will receive friends Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio (440) 277-8164. Friends may also call Saturday from 8:00 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 in Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, South Lorain. Rev., Father John C. Retar pastor of Saint Frances Cabrini Parish Lorain will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
