Leona Pehl, 90, U.S. Air Force Veteran

She was born March 4, 1922 in South Amherst and had resided in Sheffield Township over 50 years.
Leona attended schools in South Amherst and Lorain and served with the US Army 2532nd Air Force Base Unit as a Sergeant from 1945-1946. She received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and American Theater Campaign Ribbon.
Leona was an original member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township. She enjoyed reading and also did extensive canning and freezing of vegetables grown by her late husband, Roland.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Loretta (Patrick) McGannon of Lorain, Dennis (Cathy) Zywotek of Avon Lake, Gloria (Robert) Smith of Lorain, Joanne Hall of New London, Frances (Leonard) Landis of Livonia, Michigan, Virginia Stephanchick of Huron, Diane Gabryszewski of Sheffield Township, Gregory Gabryszewski of Georgia and many other loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Roland W. Pehl in 2005, parents Joseph and Sophia Zezula (nee Wozniak), stepmother Stefania Zezula, sisters Josephine Zywotek and Viola Zywotek, brother Chester Zezula, half sisters Julia Hookalo, Jean Goske and Helen Grysiewicz and half brothers Anton Grysiewicz, Rudy Grysiewicz, Ben Zezula, Paul Greswit and Joseph Greenwit.
The family will receive friends Friday 3-5 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N Ridge Rd, Elyria Township. The Rev. Donald Dunson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Amherst where the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
