Elmer B. Wilhelm, 86, World War II Veteran & Devoted Father

Photo of Elmer B.  Wilhelm Elmer B. “Moe” Wilhelm, age 86, of Lorain, passed away Wednesday October 31st, 2012 a St. Mary of the Woods Care Center following an extended illness.

He was born in Kingwood, West Virginia on January 20, 1926 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1945.

Mr. Wilhelm was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Corporal attached to the 665th Ordnance Ammunition Company; he was the recipient of the Army Occupation Medal as well as the World War II Victory Medal and was a life member of Amvets Post # 47.

Moe was employed as an E.R.W. Operator Millwright at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He retired in 1995 following a career that spanned 39 years with the steel producer.

He was a former parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a current parishioner of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish. He was also a member of the St. Lad’s Club.

He is survived by sons Rodger and his wife Ruth of Lorain, Jack and his companion Corrine also of Lorain, Tom and his wife Kathleen of Avon Lake, and Fred and his wife Debbie of Bridgeport, West Virginia, by daughters Beverly Tomazic and her husband Darryl of Lorain and Kristine Wilhelm also of Lorain. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, along with his sister Betty Kelly residing in Antioch, California.

Mr. Wilhelm was preceded in death by his wife Mary (nee Mihalik) in 1983, by sons Francis “Fritz” in 1995, and Victor “Vinny” in 2003, by his parents Ross and Waffie (nee Allen) Wilhelm, by sisters Dora Teller, Maxine “Tudie” Chedester, by Mary and Pearl both in infancy, by his twin brother George, along with brothers June and Charlie.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain Funeral services will begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, 2143 Homewood Drive. The Reverend John C. Retar, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where joint military honors will be conducted by members of V.F.W. Post # 451 and American Legion Post # 30.
