Elmer C. Toth, 88, US Army Veteran & Loving Father

He was born June 19, 1924 in Lorain to his loving parents Michael and Mary Toth (nee Palagyi).
Elmer was a graduate of Lorain High School Class of 1942 B. Following graduation, he attended Aero Industries Technical Institute in Los Angeles, California. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943 and attended different schools for Air Corp mechanic. He was sent overseas as a crew chief of a B-29 in Saipan and the Marianas Islands until the end of the war. He was discharged from the Army in 1945 and attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Elmer worked as a machinist at Thew Shovel in Lorain and then started to work at American Shipbuilding Co in Lorain as a machinist in 1947. He became assistant foreman in 1951 and was promoted to foreman of the machine shop in 1957 to 1979. He then worked at US Steel in Lorain as a turn foreman in the #1 Machine Shop and at G&W Industries and Fab Spec in Cleveland until his retirement in 2000.
Elmer was an active member of the Church of St .Peter in Lorain. From 1970-2000, he served as an usher, money counter, Lay Minister, member and treasurer of the Holy Name Society and Holy Name Man-of-the-Year, worked the church festival, cooked for retreats and was chairman of parish council. Elmer became a member of the church Cursillo in May 1964.
He enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking and baking.
He is survived by his children Mary Esther Toth Wenzel (John) of Fairport Harbor, Sharon Ann Bird (Lawrence Bud) of Virginia Beach, VA, Anastasia Heeter (William) of Portsmouth, VA, Dr. Charles R. Toth (Dr. Robin Kleiman) of Sharon, MA and Mary Jo Stammitti (Phil) of Amherst Twp., grandchildren Valerie Tanaka (Jeff) of Chicago, Paul Heeter of Portsmouth, VA, Lawrence W. B.J. Bird, II and John Bird, both of Virginia Beach, VA, Jack Toth and Derick Toth, both of Sharon, MA, Holly Renner of Chesterland and Jeffrey Wenzel of Tampa, FL. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Patricia E. Toth (nee Shawd) in 2010, son John M. Toth in 1986, granddaughter Jessica Toth in 2004, brother William Toth and sister Margaret Bruce.
The family will receive friends Saturday Jan. 5th from 9:00 am until the time of a memorial mass at 9:30 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Private family burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Chapter#20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain.
