Grace H. Surace, 100, First Woman Barber in Lorain

Photo of Grace H.  Surace Grace H. Surace, (nee Hozath), 100, of Lorain passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Wesleyn Village in Elyria following a long illness.

Mrs. Surace was born in Lorain on August 18, 1912. She was the owner and operator of Grace's Barber Shop at 9th and Brownell in Lorain. She is believed to be the first woman licensed barber in Lorain. She was an active barber in Lorain for more than 50 years.

She was a member of the Eagles Auxillary and enjoyed ceramics, bowling, and her animals especially cats.

Mrs. Surace is survived by sister, Goldie M Salyi of Elyria, and many nieces, nephews, cousins ad relatives.

Friends may call on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 from 9:00 am. until services at 10:00 am in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Funeral services at 10:00 am will be officated by her nephew, Father Lawrence Martello, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Amherst.

Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
