Robert J. Stilgenbauer, 97, U.S. Navy Veteran
Robert J. Stilgenbauer, 97 of Elyria formerly of Lorain passed away Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria following a long illness.
Mr. Stilgenbauer was born in Frazeysburg on August 2, 1915, the son of the late Edwin E. and Ethel (nee Thomas) Stilgenbauer.
He graduated from Lorain High School and Ohio University with a degree in civil engineering.
Mr. Stilgenbauer served in the U.S. Navy attaining the rank of LT. JG. His service during World War II, earned him the American Campaign Ribbon, European-Africian-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Asia Pacific Campaign Medal with one star, Liberation of the Philippines Medal and WW II Victory Medal.
He retired in 1977 as a civil engineer from from United States Steel Company.
He was a member of the Towne Club, Round Table, College Club, Black River Historical Society, Great Lakes Historical Society, The Medina Masonic Lodge, Lake Erie Consistory, and the Western Reserve Theater Organ Society. He was also a member of the Mary Lilly Society and was named Good Citizen of the Year for 2003. He was a volunteer with both the former Ohio Extended Care and the Wesleyan Village.
Mr. Stilgenbauer is survived by his daughter Cheryl A. (Donald) Strehle of Birmingham, a son Dr. Robert E. (Jane) Stilgenbauer of Lorain, grandchildren Rebecca Hill, Sarah Stilgenbauer, Matthew Strehle, Michael Strehle, 4 great grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Eloise K. (Kilgore) Stilgenbauer in 2003 and a brother Ned T. Stilgenbauer and a sister Frances Nickison.
Friends may call on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain followed at 11:00 am by a joint memorial service celebrating the lives of both Bob and Eloise, officiated by the Rev. Beth McKee, Chaplain of the Wesleyan Village.
Eloise I. (nee Kilgore) Stilgenbauer, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2003 at New Life Hospice Center at St. Joseph in Lorain, OH following a long illness. Mrs. Stilgenbauer was born on July 31, 1915 in Holloway.
They will buried together in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst Township with military honors for Mr. Stilgenbauer, provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 451.
