Arthur D. Weirich, 82, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Arthur D. Weirich Arthur D. “Dan” “Red” Weirich, 82, of Lorain, died Monday June 3, 2013 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 17, 1930 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Red served with the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

He worked for Thew Shovel in Lorain as a cab assembler for 16 years and then worked for the city of Lorain as a Supervisor in the Paint & Sign Department for 14 years before retiring.

Red was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church and AMVETS Post #47, both of Lorain. For many years, he helped place flags on the graves of deceased veterans.

Red was an avid Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan and was a Browns season ticket holder for many years. He enjoyed golfing, boating and fishing. He was a loving husband and father and a good hearted person who was always willing to help others with projects around their home.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years LaVerne M. Weirich (nee Shefski), children Daniel Weirich (Debi) of Berlin Twp. and Jill Janezic (Jack) of Sheffield Lake, sisters Patricia Brown of Wakeman and Lois Ritter of Lorain, brother Robert Weirich (Andrea) of Lorain, step granddaughter Dina Crapo and fiancé Nick Amador and step great granddaughters Angelia and Yasmin Amador, all of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur H. and Catherine Weirich (nee Malloy).

The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Robert J. Glepko, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
