Louie Engel, 86, U.S. Army Veteran

H was born June 28, 1926 in Lorain, Ohio. He lived in Ohio his entire life and grew up a farmer.
Louie graduated from Brookside H.S. in Sheffield Village where he perfected the 3 point shot before it was called a 3 point shot. After graduating, he served in WW II in the US Army as a sergeant and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan.
Louie operated Engel Trucking for many years. Later, he constructed golf courses and is credited with helping bring golf to Northern Ohio, with the construction of Sweetbriar, Willow Creek, Thunderbird Hills, and Sycamore Hills Golf Courses. He retired from LESCO in 1989.
After retirement, he and his wife Loretta traveled the U.S. extensively visiting their children and grandchildren. Late in life Louie regularly played bingo throughout Lorain and won frequently.
Louie married Loretta Jurowski in 1950 and celebrated 55 years of marriage before Loretta's passing in 2005. Louie is survived by his children. Nancy Laube, M.D. (Sheldon) of Los Altos Hills, CA, Lynda Caldwell (Michael) of LaGrange, CA, Louis Engel (Renee) of Wake Forest, NC and Matthew Engel of Gaylord, MI. Grandchildren are John Caldwell, Jimmy Caldwell, Loretta Caldwell, Nancy Caldwell, Kayla Engel, Zachary Engel, Camden Engel and Sophia Engel. Brother and sister are John Engel (Irene) of Elyria and Katherine Plato of Sheffield Township. He was preceded in death by brothers Frank, Leslie and Joey Engel.
The family will receive friends Saturday 11:00 am until the time of funeral services at 1:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Robert J. Glepko, pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
