Betty Jane Coats, 89, Enjoyed Reading & Ceramics

Photo of Betty Jane Coats Betty Jane Coats, 89, (nee Northam) of Lorain passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph with her family at her bedside.

Mrs. Coats was born in Lorain on February 23, 1924, the daughter of the late George V. and Mazie A. (nee Ridenour) Northam. She was a 1942 graduate of Lorain High School.

She was a devoted member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lorain, sang in the choir, served on several church committee's and was the secretary of the Supper Club.

In 1984, she retired as the secretary to the principal at Lorain High School following 35 years service to the Lorain School District. She also had worked at the former Nelson Stud and US Steel.

Mrs. Coats was a member of the University Club and the Lakeland Women's Club. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading and ceramics. She loved holiday decorating for her family and visiting with friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her church group, including having breakfast after church and attending movies.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy L. (Stanley) Youtt of Westminister, MA, Betty A. (Jeffrey) Smith of Canton, GA, grandchildren, David A. Youtt, Randall T Smith, Daniel W Youtt, Kimberly A Comai, Susan A Koelle, great grand children, Sarah, Emily and Samuel Youtt, Allison and Charlie Youtt, Dylan and Tyler Comai, Violet, Ireland and Sawyer Smith and a sister Geri M. (Dennis) Stelzer of Milan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William T. "Bill" Coats in 2010 and a sister Catherine Hawkins.

Friends may call on Friday, August 2, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, 423 Washington Street, Lorain, with Rev. Karen Farthing, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, OH.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 423 Washington Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44052 in her memory.
