Dan V. Bogdan, 95, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Dan V. Bogdan Dan V. Bogdan, age 95, of Lorain, passed away at his residence in the early morning hours of August 22, 2013 with his family at his side.

He was born in Lorain on October 2, 1917 and remained a life-long resident of the city. Dan was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1934-B.

He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army fulfilling duty assignments as a Staff Sergeant attached to the 6th Armored Infantry – First Armored Division in Algeria-French Morocco and Tunisia. A former prisoner-of-war and recipient of the Purple Heart, Mr. Bogdan was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Life Member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans, a Life Member of AMVETS Post # 47, and a member of the American Ex- Prisoners-Of-War Organization

Dan was employed as an outside shipper at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1981 following a career that spanned forty-two years with the steel producer.

Mr. Bogdan was a parishioner of both Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church and the Church of St. Peter and was a former parishioner of St. Basil’s Romanian Byzantine Catholic Church. He was a long-time member of Patria Romana Si Bihoreana Lodge.

Dan was a past member of the Lorain Family Y.M.C.A. who enjoyed swimming and golfing in his free time. A devoted fan of both the Cleveland Browns and Indians, he also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and following their accomplishments.

Survivors include his daughter Patt Weber (Mick) of Lorain, grandchildren Annie, Kiva, Kay, and Michael, and sister Virginia “Jean” Robertson of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia (nee Toth) in 2008, by his son Joseph D. Bogdan in 2003, by his parents Dumitru and Paraschiva (nee Boyer) Bogdan, and by his sister Victoria V. Marsico in January of this year.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Avenue, Lorain. Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park where military honors will be conducted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.

In lieu flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to either the Building Fund at Nativity BVM Catholic Church or to Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel.
