Jane Hume, 95, Enjoyed Golf & Travel

She was born on May 11, 1918 and grew up in Niles, Ohio. She graduated from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland with bachelor degrees in both music and education in 1940. She was married for 67 years to Virgil Lawrence Hume of Lorain, OH where they resided until their retirement in 1974.

Prior to her marriage Jane was a history teacher in the public school system. During her life in Lorain with her husband Virgil, Mrs. Hume was a member and/or officer of several organizations that included the East Side Literary Club, Colony Club and the Church of the Redeemer. She also played a key role in establishing the Lorain Chapter of the YWCA in the 1950s and early 60s and served as President for a number of years. Throughout her life she enjoyed gardening, golf, travel, bridge and active involvement in church and community organizations. She was famous for her sense of humor, her outgoing, caring personality and a love of showing hospitality.

In 1974, she and her husband moved to Juno Beach, Florida. While she resided in Juno Beach, she became a realtor with Illustrated Properties and earned honors in the Million Dollar Club. Mrs. Hume was active in Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach Gardens where she served as a mentor for the Mothers of Pre-Schoolers Program, Prayer Coordinator for the Women’s Ministries; Prayer Partner Ministry; and an occasional guest speaker for special events. She also served as a member of the board for The Colony residential community in Juno Beach for twelve years.

A loving, devoted wife, mother and grandma, Jane was predeceased by her husband Virgil in 2008, and her son-in-law Peter Smith. She is survived by her three children, John David Hume of New Albany, OH; Janet Hume Smith-Faszer (Loren) of Calgary, Canada, and Marti Hume Ruel (Golden) of Hermosa Beach, CA and Seattle, WA. She has six grandchildren: Alex Hume; Nathan (Laura) Smith, Nikki Smith, Kelsey (Bobby) Izat, and David Smith; and Sabra Ruel. She also has one great grandchild, Maxwell Smith.

A Celebration of Her life is being planned for early October and will be announced by the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
