Juanita Ortiz, 83, Enjoyed Spending Time With Family

Photo of Juanita Ortiz Juanita “Nana” Ortiz, 83, passed away Wednesday September 11, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a short illness.

She was born January 2, 1930 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. She moved to Lorain in 1978 where she resided until moving to Vermilion 6 years ago.

Juanita was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain and was a committed homemaker and aunt who enjoyed caring for others. She loved listening to Spanish music, cooking, tending to her flowers, going to family functions and, above all, spending time with her family.

She is survived by her nephews and their wives Fabian and Charlie Melendez of Vermilion, with whom she made her home, and Jason and Heather Melendez of Amherst, niece and her husband Lonnie and Miguel Morell of Amherst, niece Mary Diaz-Albertini of Miami Beach, Florida, sister Dominga Ortiz of Lorain and many other nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents Felix and Maria Ortiz (nee Aviles), brothers Ramon, Antonio, Florencio and Francisco and sisters Carmela, Eladia, Cruz Maria and Maria.

The family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing will be held Friday from 8:30 am until the time of the mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave, Lorain. The Rev. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Mercy RMC and New Life Hospice for their kindness and support in her final days.
