Andrew Zilka, 91, U.S. Army Veteran

He was born March 28, 1922 in Johnstown, PA and had resided in the Sheffield Township area most of his life.
Andrew graduated from Clearview High School in 1940. He served with the US Army Air Corps during World War II as a corporal in the 327th Depot Supply Squadron. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
Andrew worked at US Steel in Lorain in the Rolling Mills and Open Hearth retiring in 1982 after 40 years.
He was a volunteer Fireman with the Sheffield Township Fire Department for over 40 years retiring as a Lieutenant.
Andrew was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Olga Zilka, children Brian Zilka (companion Barb Kowalczyk) of Sheffield Twp and Cynthia VanBuren of Lorain, grandchildren Stephanie and Brian Zilka and Andrew and Grant VanBuren, 4 great grandchildren, sister Dorothy Rancher (Richard) of Sheffield Twp and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Victoria Zilka, brothers John, Joseph, Michael and Charles Zilka and sisters Katherine Rakar and Veronica Balcik.
The family will receive friends Friday 5-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 9:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N Ridge Rd Elyria. The Rev. Donald Dunson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
