Helen Bereznay, 91, Enjoyed Playing Bridge & Quilting

She was born July 10, 1922 in Lorain and had resided in Amherst since 1995 moving from Lorain. For the past 2 years, she resided with her daughter Kathy in Ft. Myers.
Helen was a 1940 graduate of Lorain High School. She attended the St. Joseph School of Practical Nursing in Lorain and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. Later, she attended Kent State University where she earned a Bachelor Degree in Education.
Helen worked as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain. She taught at St. Thomas Catholic School in Sheffield Lake and Lorain City Schools in the Title 1 Reading program before retiring. She also became a licensed real estate agent.
Helen was a member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain where she was active serving as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. She took communion to parishioners in nursing homes and was a member of the church Congregation of the Sacred Heart.
Helen was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women, the Lorain County Council of Catholic Women, Lakeland Women’s Club, Lorain City Retired Teachers Association, Lorain County Retired Teachers Association and a member and past president of the American Association of University Women Lorain branch.
She enjoyed playing bridge, quilting, traveling and playing golf and had a hole-in-one at Aquamarine Golf Course in Avon Lake in 1992.
She is survived by her children Kathleen Jeskie (Frank) of Ft Myers, FL and Kevin Bereznay (Lucinda) of North Olmsted, 7 grandchildren, 1 step grandson, 4 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Joseph Bereznay in 1995, parents John and Helen Dargo (nee Vargo), brothers Edward and Eugene Dargo and twin sister Irene Bereznay.
The family will receive friends Friday 3-7 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing time will be held Saturday from 9:00 am until the time of the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
